Choices for People provides year-round support and instructional programs designed to aid individuals with disabilities in developing essential life skills. These skills promote inclusion, independence, self-sufficiency, and productivity; and aim to maximize the individual’s quality of life in the least restrictive environment possible.

Choices for People assists in individual goal-oriented program planning and acts as an advocate in the community through the removal of attitudinal, architectural, environmental, financial, employment-related, communicational, transportation, and other barriers.

Position Summary

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for supporting individuals in achieving employment and community inclusion goals as outlined in their Individual Support Plan (ISP). This role delivers individualized services, coaching, and advocacy to promote meaningful work experiences, personal growth, and increased independence. The DSP assists individuals in identifying, securing, and maintaining employment opportunities aligned with their strengths, preferences, and interests.

Duties and Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Establish a secure, positive environment that nurtures individuals' needs, self-expression, and goals.
  • Overseeing individuals and taking care of their needs and performing housekeeping duties.
  • Delivers individualized services, training, and care for individuals in compliance with healthcare professionals’ instructions, their individual plan, and other specific guidelines.
  • Provide direct support to individuals seeking employment or workplace integration, using person-centered strategies.
  • Coordinate and oversee services authorized by Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), the Department of Mental Health (DMH), or other referral sources.
  • Support individuals in exploring vocational interests and strengths through discovery and community-based experiences.
  • Guide individuals through resume building, interview preparation, job applications, and follow-up communication with employers.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local businesses, employers, and community partners to identify job leads, internships, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Deliver individualized job coaching and on-the-job support to foster workplace success.
  • Promote inclusion in workplace, educational, and community settings; advance individuals’ decision-making, self-expression, and productivity.
  • Support skill-building and independence in areas related to employment and daily living tasks.
  • Assist with community-based transportation and errands as needed.
  • Maintain documentation and accurate, timely records in accordance with agency standards and regulatory guidelines.
  • Communicate regularly with individuals, families, employers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated service delivery.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment and uphold all policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Operate facility vehicles when required, in compliance with organizational and governmental policies.
  • Remain current with best practices, training, and regulations relevant to employment support services.
  • Actively participate in compliance reviews and audits to include tax functions if applicable.
  • Uphold all policies and standards, ensuring legislative regulations are followed
Requirements:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

At minimum, 18 years of age.

High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and implement ISPs and service guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to support individuals with disabilities in employment or community settings.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office and data entry.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information professionally.
  • Familiarity with person-centered practices, workplace accommodations, and advocacy.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to kneel, stand, sit, crawl, crouch, reach, or climb as needed.
