Position Title: Head of School (Full-time, Salaried)
Start date: Negotiable, no earlier than August 1, 2025

Warren Young Explorers School (Warren YES), a public charter school approved to open in Fall 2026, is excited to be hiring a Head of School. The mission of Warren YES is to create a child-focused, place-based learning environment that motivates students to be purposeful, creative, ethical and compassionate leaders, while building a healthy future for themselves, their community, and the planet.
As our Head of School, you will play a key role in preparing to open the doors of Warren YES. You will work closely with the Board of Directors (Board), community members and families to bring Warren YES’ vision to reality. You will work with dedication to the mission as well as leadership, enthusiasm, adaptability and expertise to build what will become a strong community institution. This job description focuses on the startup responsibilities; it will be revised in collaboration with the Board prior to the launch of the school to reflect a different set of responsibilities once the school is in operation.
Startup Responsibilities
Represent and promote Warren YES–both at events and informally through community interactions
Participate in Ready to Open workshops managed by the NC Charter School Review Board
Lead recruitment efforts for staff positions
Lead student recruitment efforts, including development and deployment of lottery system
Support policy development (for staff, students, families) that extends and honors our mission
Develop and manage effective communication systems (internal and external) required for the startup period, with an eye towards transitioning to operations
Develop effective operational systems, including supporting the selection of contractual firms for key operational roles (Infinite Campus, LINQ, etc)
Gauge demand for transportation, school meals, before/after school programs, etc. and work collaboratively with Board, staff and others to plan solutions that support and enrich student and family life
Implement curriculum plans, in collaboration with the Board
Work in collaboration with the Board to develop and manage the school’s budget
Develop a school calendar that meets requirements
Support fundraising efforts and help to implement grant-funded projects that support the school’s launch
In collaboration with board, ensure facility is welcoming and ready to receive students upon opening Support the development of community partnerships and parent/student advisory boards
Collaborate with partner entities, including the proposed Warren YES Early Learning Center, to develop programs that benefit the community
Requirements
School leadership experience and teaching experience
Excellent communications skills (written and verbal); ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences in a variety of settings
Strategic thinker; ability to set and reach long-term goals
Proven ability to use data to make informed decisions
Track record of improving student outcomes
Commitment to creating a positive, open school culture aligned with Warren YES’ mission
Experience living and working in our county or other rural community
Exhibiting a growth mindset and supporting others in doing so
