UWC Atlantic College is recruiting for a passionate IBDP Social and Cultural Anthropology Teacher. Position summary UWC Atlantic College is seeking a new teacher to join our Group 3 - Studies in Individuals and Societies to teach within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) from August 2026 on a permanent basis. If you are available for a January start date, you are also welcome to apply for the fixed-term post that is being advertised. The teaching responsibilities in this role would be delivering IBDP Social and Cultural Anthropology (Higher and Standard Level). Experience teaching Social and Cultural Anthropology or subjects from other related disciplines within the IBDP Programme is desirable, but for candidates transferring from different qualifications, the relevant IBDP training would be offered. A passion for teaching is essential. Teach in the Group 3 - Individuals and Societies Faculty, delivering IB DP Social and Cultural Anthropology. Participate in the delivery of the college’s co-curricular IB Creative, Active, Service (CAS) programme. Undertake the role of tutor for a small group of students, supporting student life, safeguarding and wellbeing. Contribute as a full member of the UWC Atlantic community, participating in all aspects of life at the College and supporting the aims and ethos of the UWC movement. Responsibilities Excellence and innovation in learning and teaching Provide effective teaching and learning to students participating in the subject areas, ensuring that lessons are based on clear learning objectives and that all students make progress. Employ best practices for teaching students, including inquiry and problem-based learning, scaffolding, bookending, frequent review and feedback and differentiated instruction whilst creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. Establish a positive and inspiring classroom environment that best enables a diverse group of students to flourish whilst recognising the different needs of students based on their linguistic, historical, cultural and socio-economic experiences. Plan and deliver lessons and other learning activities, maintaining a purposeful and calm atmosphere in the classroom and other learning areas. Liaise with other colleagues to deliver units of work in a collaborative way and contribute to the production and preparation of schemes of work. Supervise Extended Essays as and when required. Assess, record and report on student performance, maintaining rigorous and accurate records, including students’ attainment, attendance, homework set and outline lesson plans. Mark and return work in line with the assessment policy, including feedback for improvement and progress for each student. Provide assessment reports within the assessment cycle and when specifically requested. Ensure that suitably differentiated material and learning pathways are provided to challenge all students at the appropriate level, regardless of their ability. Commitment to the co-curricular programme Actively promote, support and participate in the co-curricular programme and College life, ensuring students engage with the UWC Mission and participate in co-curricular sessions. Lead and support the development and enhancement of Creative, Active or Service-based experiences for students. Commit to experiential learning and the importance of reflection to build and enhance deeper and more varied student learning experiences. Pastoral support and guidance Play an active role in creating a culture of safeguarding at the College. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to the safeguarding of students, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person. Provide effective and proactive support for students to promote their general progress, well-being, and positive attitudes, raising and escalating concerns as appropriate. Act as a tutor to an assigned group of students and build relationships with all students, being available when needed to listen and offer support and encouragement. Primary responsibility for 8-10 tutees and a member of the House Tutor team working together with House Mentors and other tutors. Skills and preferred experience A degree (or qualification to the equivalent of degree level) in the specialist subject or a related subject. Subject-specific teaching experience and the ability to teach the IBDP Higher Level and IB Standard Level courses. Demonstrable passion and detailed knowledge of the subject area. Commitment to the safeguarding of children and young adults and an understanding of a boarding school / independent school environment. Ability to adapt personal teaching style to suit a student body made up of 15 – 19 year olds from different educational systems and cultures. Ability to use appropriately a range of learning and teaching strategies for whole classes, individuals and groups which stimulate, challenge, engage and motivate students. Ability to set clear and appropriate targets, provide feedback to students and make use of assessment information to promote each student’s attainment and progress, and to plan future lessons. A demonstrable ability to successfully motivate and inspire students. Ability to encourage and maintain a good standard of discipline in the classroom through well-focused teaching, positive relationships and good classroom management. Internationally-minded with a demonstrable passion for and deep understanding of the UWC mission and the identity of the college, including the ability to clearly and positively communicate the ethos and ideals of the College in theory and practice. Proven ability to recognise and dismantle systemic barriers impacting underserved and marginalised people. Ability to offer activities aligned with the co-curricular CAS programme. Willingness to undergo training in an area of the co-curricular programme and gain knowledge, experience and qualifications. Understanding of statutory requirements relating to health and safety, equality and diversity, ALN and Safeguarding. Excellent IT skills and ability to use Google Classroom and suite. Excellent time management, organisational and planning skills and an ability to differentiate tasks appropriately and to work to tight deadlines. Ability to successfully work independently, under own initiative and as part of a team. Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate at all levels and to explain complex issues and concepts. Commitment to continuous professional development and personal improvement. Ability to work well under pressure, remain calm and cope with the unexpected. Commitment to the deliberate diversity that is core to UWC Atlantic, able to demonstrate the ability to identify and address biases and use culturally relevant approaches to support students and employees. Interest in real-world and transformative learning experiences, as well as demonstrate cultural competency and an ability to work in a collegial manner. The ability to drive a minibus or willingness to learn and become qualified is desirable. Flexibility to work outside the normal working week, including the requirement to work on bank holidays during term time.
