PHYSICS TEACHER
10-MONTH POSITION (200 DAYS) Starting August 6, 2025 Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students. Teachers at MLWGS plan, organize, and implement appropriate instruction for a gifted program that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Candidates must demonstrate expertise and knowledge in both content and contemporary instructional practices in the science classroom. A bachelor’s degree in physics is required.
Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in physics is required.
Thorough knowledge of advanced high school physics curriculum and pedagogy is required.
Endorsement in gifted education is preferred
Prior teaching experience with gifted education and/or prior teaching with gifted high school students is preferred. The chosen candidate will be required to earn the gifted endorsement within four years of the hire date.
Experience teaching AP Physics (1, 2, or C) is preferred.
Primary Responsibilities:
Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to the school philosophy, goals, and objectives as outlined in the adopted course study.
Makes purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.
Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet the individual needs of students.
Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
Provides progress and interim reports as required.
Prepares substitute folder containing appropriate information as required by the Director and/or his/her designee.
Plans and prescribes purposeful assignments for tutors as needed.
Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate.
Demonstrates a strong grasp of the subject matter.
Uses effective oral and written expression.
Become acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
Curriculum Development:
Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum.
Assists in the ongoing curriculum process, including the revision of written courses of study.
Classroom Management:
Develops, in accordance with school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
If applicable, submit for the Director’s and/or his/her designee approval requisitions for purchases of materials and equipment to support the program.
Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.
Professional Growth:
Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
Encourage membership in appropriate professional organizations.
Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs at the school.
Attends staff, department, and committee meetings as required.
Student Evaluation:
Evaluate the accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of students’ work, mastery skills checklists, criterion-referenced tests, and norm-referenced tests.
Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required by the Director and/or his/her designee.
Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics, and state and federal laws.
Physical Demands:
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting; exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally. Occasional stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion. Frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping. Constant talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work.
